THIS IS NOT MY HAT

“Combines spare text and art to deliver no small measure of laughs in another darkly comic haberdashery whodunit. . . . Hats off!” —Kirkus Reviews (starred review)

When a tiny fish shoots into view wearing a round blue topper (which happens to fit him perfectly), trouble could be following close behind. So it’s a good thing a certain enormous fish hasn’t woken up. And even if he does, it’s not like he’ll ever know what happened, right? Deadpan visual humor swims to the fore in this Caldecott Medal–winning title in the celebrated hat trilogy.

Jon Klassen is a Canadian-born author and illustrator who has charmed readers of all ages with his unique and captivating storytelling style. Born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Klassen’s love for art and storytelling began at a young age, and he pursued his passion by studying animation at Sheridan College.

His journey into the world of children’s literature took off when he collaborated with author Mac Barnett on “Extra Yarn,” which earned him a Caldecott Honor in 2013. However, it was with “I Want My Hat Back” in 2011, the first book in “The Hat Trilogy,” that Klassen solidified his place as a prominent figure in the industry.

Our Review

This tale follows the journey of a small fish who finds himself entangled in an unexpected adventure when he decides to snatch a hat from a much larger fish. Filled with a sense of mischief, the little fish revels in his misdeed, smugly confident that he will escape any consequences. He swims through the darkened depths of the ocean. He gleefully imagines how the big fish will remain clueless about the hat’s disappearance and his own involvement.

Unbeknownst to the tiny fish, however, the larger fish is silently tailing him, steadily closing the gap between them. The little fish continues his self-absorbed chatter, oblivious to the impending trouble that lurks behind him.

As the story unfolds, it reaches a conclusion that may cause some children to feel a tinge of sadness. Yet, rest assured, the unhappy events are not explicitly depicted; rather, they are subtly suggested through illustrations. This leaves room for you and your children to come up with their own version of a happier ending, fostering creativity and imagination.

Ultimately, this heartwarming tale reminds us of the consequences that can arise from small mischiefs and the importance of treating others with respect, regardless of their size.

We must point out though, that the black humour in these books may not appeal to all children. In fact it may upset some. We would advise parents to read this on thier own before sitting down to storytime.
