About The Author
Beverly Cleary is one of America’s most successful children’s authors – she is responsible for bringing us many well known characters such as Henry Huggins and Ribsy, Ramona Quimby and Beezus Quimby and of course the main mouse himself, Ralph S Mouse! Beverly Cleary was born on April 12 1916 and sadly passed away on March 25 2021. In a career spanning many years her books have sold over 91 million copies worldwide since her first book was published in 1950.
She was inspired to start writing books when she was working as a children’s librarian. Her patrons told her that they wanted to find characters that they could identify with and Cleary struggled to find recommendations for them. So after years of looking for recommendations and giving live performances Cleary wrote her first series of novels, Henry Huggins. Like many of her works Henry Huggins is about ordinary people and was based on her own experiences growing up. Cleary’s works are often praised for their attention to detail and the realism that they generate towards the daily small details of childhood and growing up. Her books have stood the test of time and are still loved by children today as much as they were when they were first published in the 1950s.
