If you visit the children’s section of any bookstore or library in America today, you’ll see a fuzzy black cat named Splat. The original Splat the Cat book came out in 2008. It swiftly rose to the top of the charts with eight additional books in the original series. And over a dozen more companion books in what is now an entire Splat universe. The character might look like he just took a tumble in your dryer, but it’s all part of his charm.
But despite being a family favorite, information on this highly popular children’s picture book can be hard to come by. Not because the information isn’t available. But because there is so much of it, it can feel overwhelming. That’s why we felt the need to provide our readers with a dedicated post on all things Splat. Keep reading for a full list of books, our review of the original, answers to frequently asked questions, and more!

Just in case, Splat decides to bring along his pet mouse, Seymour, and hides him in his lunchbox. The teacher, Mrs. Wimpydimple, introduces Splat to the class and he soon starts learning all his important cat lessons.
But when Seymour escapes and the cats do what cats do (they chase mice!), Splat’s worried again. Maybe now he’ll lose all his friends, old and new! Just in time, wise Mrs. Wimpydimple takes charge and teaches everyone an important new lesson.

Our Review of Splat the Cat
Our kids are already big fans of Splat. They love reading this one at the start of the school year. It’s a little tradition at our house. This book is perfect for children with first-day-of school anxiety.
Splat, a fuzzy black cat, is nervous about his first day of cat school. He makes excuses to skip class, but his mother insists he goes to school. So Splat decides to bring his pet mouse with him in his lunch box. The mouse, named Seymour, manages to escape and runs loose in the classroom. Being cats, Splat’s classmates chase after Seymour, causing a lot of chaos. This is always the kids favorite part, by the way! Splat’s teacher manages to divert the class with the promise of milk for lunch. But the door to the milk cupboard is stuck. Splat gets a great idea to help. After whispering to Seymour, the mouse squeezes into the cupboard and opens the door, making him and Splat the heroes of the day. After school, Splat tells his mother how much fun he had. He can’t wait to go back.
The illustrations are another personal favorite for all Splat books. They’re so full of silly details like the chocolate covered mice in the display window Splat passes on his way to school. One of my favorite things to do when reading with my kids is to point out silly details like that. The kids laugh and giggle as they point out details too. It’s a great way to keep them engaged in the story.
While this book is short, it works perfectly for toddlers and busy parents. If your family is anything like ours, you’ll end up reading it over and over and over.
