Our Review of How to Catch a Monster
There’s a monster in my closet with claws, and teeth, and hair,
and tonight, I’m going to scare him! He lives just right through there…
This instalment of the How to Catch series is perfect for the spooky season. But it’s not scary, we promise! No nightmares here.
The art of this is very cute, fitting perfectly to make sure the topic of monsters doesn’t unsettle your child. Andy Elkerton has done a brilliant job at giving such an iconic series an equally iconic art style.
The rhyming is fun and Adam uses such a wide variety of words, we’re sure your child will learn some fun phrases or two!
The protagonist is brave and is a brilliant way to show your kids that they should face their fears – even if they need to dress up as a ninja. The monster isn’t scary in the slightest, and even as the protagonist tries to trap the monster, the pair look like they’re having fun and playing.
We appreciate as well how there was a point in the book where the monster got sad at being caught. From that point, the monster was more of a lovable character than something scary. (Not to mention the fart jokes always get a laugh!)
All in all, this book is a good way to present to your child that not everything that may scare them is actually scary, and may open them up to facing their fears and trying new things! Great job on the writing/illustration team.
