James Dean is the original creator and illustrator of Pete the Cat. He is a self-taught artist originally from Fort Payne, Alabama. His passion for drawing became apparent at a young age, and as a child, you could find James drawing his favorite characters like Snoopy and Yogi Bear.
James earned his degree in electrical engineering from Auburn University and went on to work for Georgia Power for a number of years. Eventually, he was called to pursue his art full- time and began selling his work at art festivals around the Southeast. It was during this time that he began creating paintings and drawing of his cat, Pete. The little blue cat showed up as a character in James’s artwork around 1999 and has been a permanent fixture ever since.
James Dean’s art has been sold in more than ninety galleries and shops across the United States. He has devoted his paintings to Pete the Cat for fifteen years and turned his natural love for cats into his life’s work. James published his first book, The Misadventures of Pete the Cat, a history of his artwork, in 2006. He illustrated his first self-published children’s book, Pete the Cat: I Love My White Shoes, in 2008. There are now almost 100 published Pete the Cat titles with more coming out all the time.
In Pete The Cat and the Missing Cupcakes Pete and his friend, Gus are baking some cupcakes for a party. When they count the cupcakes they realise that one is missing. Pete and Gus decided to follow the clues and investigate what has happened to the missing cupcakes.
Pete and Gus encounter all their friends and ask if they have stolen the cupcakes. Each animal answers no they haven’t and gives a reason as to why it couldn’t have been them. As Pete and Gus continue to investigate more and more cupcakes go missing.
Eventually they discover Grumpy Toad….and he is surrounded by empty cup cake wrappers. They have found the culprit! Grumpy Toad apologizes and says that he couldn’t help himself. Grumpy Toad feels so bad he tells Pete that he shouldn’t be allowed to attend the party. Pete states that everyone deserves a second chance and they forgive Toad, telling him that he can still come to the party.
The next day at the party Grumpy Toad arrives with enough cupcakes for everyone and they party the day away!
The book is filled with vibrant illustrations and rhyming text, making it an engaging and fun read for young children. The story also emphasizes the importance of teamwork, problem-solving, and staying positive in the face of challenges. It also teaches children an important lesson about forgiveness and friendship.
