About The Author
James Dean is the original creator and illustrator of Pete the Cat. He is a self-taught artist originally from Fort Payne, Alabama. His passion for drawing became apparent at a young age, and as a child, you could find James drawing his favorite characters like Snoopy and Yogi Bear.
James earned his degree in electrical engineering from Auburn University and went on to work for Georgia Power for a number of years. Eventually, he was called to pursue his art full- time and began selling his work at art festivals around the Southeast. It was during this time that he began creating paintings and drawing of his cat, Pete. The little blue cat showed up as a character in James’s artwork around 1999 and has been a permanent fixture ever since.
James Dean’s art has been sold in more than ninety galleries and shops across the United States. He has devoted his paintings to Pete the Cat for fifteen years and turned his natural love for cats into his life’s work. James published his first book, The Misadventures of Pete the Cat, a history of his artwork, in 2006. He illustrated his first self-published children’s book, Pete the Cat: I Love My White Shoes, in 2008. There are now almost 100 published Pete the Cat titles with more coming out all the time.

Our Review
Looking for a book that will make you want to put on your blue suede shoes and dance? Look no further than “Pete the Cat and the New Guy”! This groovy tale follows the coolest cat around as he meets a new friend and learns to embrace his unique quirks.
In Pete The Cat and the New Guy our titular feline sees a new, unusual character in town. When Pete finally gets to meet the new guy, he finds a Platypus named Gus. Pete finds that Gus is not like Pete but tells him that “being different is cool”. The next day they meet Squirrel who tells Gus that climbing is easy and suggests that Gus should try but Gus can’t climb. Pete says “Don’t be sad, don’t be blue, there is something everyone can do”. The next character they meet is Toad who says that jumping is easy but Gus finds he can’t jump either. The next day they meet Octopus who says juggling is easy but Gus finds that he can’t juggle.
Gus starts to get sad that he can’t do the things that the other characters can’t do, despite Pete’s reassurances. Then Pete hears Gus rocking out on the drums and the rest of the character’s join in Pete’s band, having found something that they can all do together. Then the whole squad rocks out together!
The illustrations in this book are the cat’s meow, with bright colors and bold lines that are sure to catch the eye of even the coolest of cats. And the story itself is just as fun, with a catchy rhythm that will have you tapping your toes and singing along.
But what really sets this book apart is the message it conveys. “Pete the Cat and the New Guy” teaches us that it’s okay to be different and that we should embrace our own individuality. And that’s a message that’s definitely worth purring about! Poor Gus struggled to participate in the same cool cat activities as Pete the Cat, but he didn’t get sad, he didn’t get blue. Instead we see he’s got his own awesome talents!
