Jory John is an American author of children’s books and is known for incorporating dark humor and discussing difficult topics in his books.

This story is a wonderful commentary on growing up and identity. Everyone in the school knows the cool beans. Unfortunately, butterbean isn’t cool. He used to hang in the same pod as the cool beans but things have changed, and now he feels totally alone and different. In a lovely turn, they show him kindness and they are all still friends. Slowly he begins to find himself and his identity.
This books has the signature charm that all Jory John books have, supported with the fun art of Pete Oswald leaves for an unforgettable addition to the book series. We learn that cliques aren’t helpful and only serve to further exclude others. Embrace those who embrace you. It’s a wonderful message to send to kids, with the signature fun writing style.
