About The Author

Jory John is an American author of children’s books and is known for incorporating dark humor and discussing difficult topics in his books.

It’s no surprise that a man like Jory John found his way in children’s books. Early in his career, he volunteered at an educational nonprofit in San Francisco before being hired as the program director. There he created Thanks and Have Fun Running the Country: Kids’ Letters to President Obama.

His books have landed on the New York Times bestseller list including the first (The Good Egg) and second positions (The Bad Seed). He seems pretty happy about it too!

Aside from The Food Group Series, which earned him the bulk of his awards, Jory Johns has also written:

  • Critter Jitters series
  • Animal Problems series
  • The Terrible Two series
  • Goodnight Already! series
  • All My Friends… series

As well as many, many standalone books!

Our Review

This fun little book packs some important lessons!

Our lovely sunflower seed isn’t so lovely. He does bad stuff and is a little mean. Eventually, our seed decides he doesn’t want to be bad, and doesn’t want to feel bad, so he starts trying to be good!

It definitely isn’t an easy process!

It has a sweet and fairly straightforward pretence, but The Bad Seed Jory John is known for having some fairly dark topics in them (presented in a way enjoyable for children, of course). We find out that the seed is bad because of some unexpected trauma in his life which changed him and left him feeling unlike himself.

When we’re upset, we can all be bad seeds. This book is about choices. It teaches your kids that even if they’ve been a bad seed, they always have the option to be a good seed, even if it is a little difficult and even if people might not accept the change at first.
