James Dean is an American author and illustrator, best known for his work on the popular children’s book series, “Pete the Cat.” He was born in 1957 in Fort Payne, Alabama, and grew up in nearby Auburn.
Dean attended Auburn University, where he studied art and architecture. After college, he worked as an advertising art director before deciding to pursue a career in children’s books.
In 2008, Dean teamed up with writer Eric Litwin to create “Pete the Cat,” a series of books featuring a groovy blue cat who loves to sing and play his guitar. The series quickly became a hit with children and parents alike. And it has since expanded to include numerous titles, as well as merchandise such as plush toys and apparel.
In addition to his work on “Pete the Cat,” Dean has also illustrated other children’s books, including “The Misadventures of Sweetie Pie” and “The Pink Refrigerator.”

Kimberly Dean is a celebrated children’s author, artist, widely recognized for co-creating the famous children’s book character, Pete the Cat, and being a New York Times bestselling author. Her journey to becoming a full-time author and artist began after leaving the Governor’s Press Office in 1998 to pursue her passion for art. Kimberly’s artwork gained popularity after she started selling it at various art festivals in 1999 and eventually opened her own art gallery in 2003. She enjoys experimenting with different styles and mediums.
In 2004, Kimberly joined forces with fellow artist James Dean, and together they brought Pete the Cat to life through children’s books. They started with “The Misadventures of Pete the Cat,” a coffee table book of James’s artwork, which was released in 2006. Kimberly’s dream of becoming a published children’s book author became a reality in 2013 with the release of “Pete the Cat and His Magic Sunglasses.” Since then, she has authored several of the Pete the Cat books . And she has also started another series featuring her own characters, Willow and Oliver.
Kimberly currently resides in Savannah, where she enjoys the company of her dog, Gypsy, and cat, Phoebe.
